A meme for the holidays
Dec. 20th, 2006 08:50 amSo there are all these cheerful memes about the holidays, and what varoius people will be gifting you with,m but some of my strangest memories of christmas are horrible. So:
what is the worst thing that happend at Christmas to:
the tree?
The food?
The weather?
The transporation?
the gifts?
The family fight?
The failure of the modern world: (example, the Christmas we had no running water, becuase the Orange groves next door pumped the aquifer dry... no, really.)

Date: 2006-12-20 01:59 pm (UTC)the tree? We always had a live tree, as in, a tree in a pot that was to be planted in the yard afterwards. The year of the loquot, no orniments would fit, because it was a very small tree with no branches. so we hung the orniments from the windows on strings.
The food? I got drunk off of Grandma's Rum balls, which are full of rum, and not baked, or anything. So after five of those I was in a special place...
The weather? Ah, Florida. The year of the eighty five degree Christmas, where we all put on pants and sweated all day.
The transporation? well... one year we spent all day in the car. Christmas eve Dad dropped me off in Arcadia. Christmas morning we had christmas at home the drove an hour to Sarasota for Grandma's Christmas. Then to Leesburg, (3 hours) for the other grandma's Christmas... after that we only did one family per holiday.
the gifts?
The year of the Socks. I got a pair of socks from every aunt...
The family fight? for the most part we avoided that. But one year there was the great fight between my stepfather and mom on the drive of crazyness (see above)
The failure of the modern world: (example, the Christmas we had no running water, becuase the Orange groves next door pumped the aquifer dry... no, really.)And another year there was no eletricity after a storm, but luckly we heated with wood and cooked with gas, so it was only really annoying, rather than life threating.
Nerver cared.
Date: 2006-12-20 03:54 pm (UTC)Tree) The tree was metal and plastic, and only occasionally was knocked over and an ornament or so occasionally lept to its death.
Food) We are Italian. The food is always plentiful and delicious.
Weather) Florida X-mas weather always sucks. Never any snow.
Transportation) Long standing tradition in my family to hole up for the holidays and not go out any time near x-mas.
gifts) Gifts come when they are ready. We don't rush, nor do we slack. We just let them happen. It has been years since I have been desperately in consumer "need" for anything. For example: Sometime after X-mas, my mother will take me out to get a shiny new bike, or at least a bike new to me.
Family Fight) Once upon a time, I bet my father was cranky while cooking, but my mom always just leaves him alone until he is done, so no fights. My parents would fight occasionally, but I don't remember any happening around x-mas. And as we never stressed about holidays, no increase in fight probability.
Modern World) Christmas has never demonstrated to me in the past the glories of Christian Life, or extolled the virtues of Jesus. Historically I simply have born witness to the crimes of consumerism and people forgetting to have a good time.

Date: 2006-12-20 04:12 pm (UTC)The food? patsy cooked. everything was raw but we had to eat it anyway to spare her feelings.
The weather? no snow! :-( (there was also the time we were snowed in during a blizzard, but i was a kid so i thought it was neat)
The transporation? snowed in. all roads closed.
the gifts? see "the tree"
The family fight? My mom and her father got into a fight about driving directions on christmas eve and didn't talk for four years after that.
The failure of the modern world: hmm... that would probably be the same time that we were snowed in during a blizzard. all our lights went out. but we had a fireplace and a gas stove so it was all good.
Miss Claire, a favor...
Date: 2006-12-20 09:48 pm (UTC)My parents and I have to go to my uncle's wedding, and we're trying to find somebody local to take care of their cats for those two days.
Yes, there's money involved. ;-)
So just let me know if you're free. If not, no big deal.
Thanks.

Date: 2006-12-20 11:58 pm (UTC)Um, last year it was tilted kind of weird because the foundation has gotten old. This year dad didn't want one.
The food?
Last year we basically just ordered platters from Publix. They were good and all, but it wasn't the same.
The weather?
I don't remember it raining much, or anything particular that stood out.
The transporation?
There like... never is any.
the gifts?
Ugh. One year when I was really little I got my mother this watch, and she started crying because she didn't like it, or I thought so. Another year she got mad at my dad because he didn't get her anything. Like, at all.
The family fight?
At first I read that as family night. Yeah, I dunno, I've been pissed at dad at -least- every other Christmas in general. I think one year I came out to get my stuff and then like left and went in my room to shut the door or somethhing.
The failure of the modern world:
I don't think this applies, but I can't think of anyplace else to stick it. One Christmas I woke up, got a glass of milk because my throat was dry, looked over and saw my parents looking at me expectantly, and said, "What?" and went straight back to bed for 5+ hours. It was like nine or something. I just completely forgot what day it was.
